Our advice for 24

With this many boxes to choose from, pick by the youngest child. Plush bears and foam footballs suit kindergarten; invisible ink pens and plaster dig kits are better from second grade.

  1. Count the list. Names on the class list, plus the teacher, plus one spare.
  2. Pick the toy. Choose for the youngest child and for the school's rules.
  3. Sign in rounds. Six cards a sitting is plenty for small hands; start two evenings ahead.
  4. Slot the toys in. Each toy fits the cut-out on its card. Do this last so nothing gets played with early.

One or two children too many?

If the list has grown past 24, these boxes of 28 are the next size up.
